Preview KEW Episode 41: State of the Podcast

I figured I’d take a little time to check in about where I’ve been, where I am, and where I’m going. A little over a year ago KEW was just an idea. I felt compelled to learn how to podcast and embrace the digital age. I was missing teaching and wanted to share my experience with an audience. I knew nothing about podcasting, websites, or YouTube. In fact, though I have been an avid podcast listener, I sort of shunned YouTube because it seemed to be so ubiquitous with the young and I’m pushing 50. But I decided instead to see what all the fuss was about.

I was pretty unclear about my audience and mission, but it is revealing itself over time. I think 40 Episodes is long enough to realize I am committed and will continue to put out content on a regular basis. I came to understand 50 minutes may be a bit long so I’ve shortened my episodes to 20. I have also added interviews to broaden my reach.

In fact, I now see that part of my original mission, to build a discourse and community, was a bit naive. I have learned that community already exists and doesn’t need to be built. As such, I am not making a concerted effort to network with the existing community of like-minded-thinkers and have added Linkedin and am considering Medium as networking outlets.

My content continues to follow my inspiration, and as I am now receiving healing and training from TWO mindset and somatic healers (call them coaches if you must), I have more material to work with than ever.

I have several Curiosity interviews edited and ready for release. I will likely release an interview episode about once a month or every three weeks, with regular episodes on other weeks.

I hope you are enjoying the content and I am very much open to criticism and feedback, as always feel free to email me at kpluseiswise@gmail.com any time!

Thanks for reading, listening, and being curious.

FLASHBACK! KEW Episode 15: Rat Racer

If you’re part of the Rat Race, you’re a Rat Racer! And maybe you’re doing really well. Winning, even. But even if you win, like Lily Tomlin said, you’re still a Rat.

That’s how I have felt during the 35 years I’ve been working. Even when I got my ‘dream job’ as a professor, I still felt the pressure to win the Rat Race. Even now that I’m trying to do my own thing, and figure out what other options there are besides the Rat Race, I feel the tug.

Though this episode is from summer 2020, I am currently exploring alternatives to the Rat Race. Or, more accurately, alternatives to the money, fame, and power that you can win in the Rat Race. That’s the pull, after all, isn’t it?

What if we valued things above money, fame, and power? Like, loving relationships, intelligence, curiosity . . . money will always be important, but what if there were other things to win that were recognized as meaningful to all?

More on that later this week. For now here’s a look back at why the Rat Race sucks.

KEW Episode 20: Enough

When asked how much is enough, John D. Rockefeller famously replied, “Just a little more”. We’ve all thought this about some things. Whether it’s losing ‘enough’ weight, making ‘enough’ money, being loved ‘enough’ we all (mistakenly) believe that if we get ‘enough’ of ‘whatever’, we’ll be ‘happy’. And since a lot of us either want many things, or aren’t sure which things we want the most, we tend to maximize ‘enough toward everything’. So we end up chasing many ‘enoughs’ and, even if we get them, we (amazingly) aren’t happy.

Here I discuss the Law of Diminishing Returns (or Cost/Benefit Analysis) as a metric to learn that ‘enough’ is less than we think. And I use this ‘rule’ to help prioritize my life and focus on what things I need to maximize, and how to be efficient about it so I have enough energy left over for all the other stuff.
