Do you ever feel like no one ‘gets you’? Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong? Like people just don’t understand where you’re coming from?
I have talked to many therapists, coaches, counselors, and psychologists and they all claim that this is one of the most common problems reported to them.
So I wonder, if we all feel different doesn’t that unite us?
Can we not ‘get together’ about this ‘feeing different’ issue?
If we’re all different, aren’t we all the same?
It reminds me of how all the non-conformists in high school all look the same.
I think we find our identities, at least at first, by identifying what we are NOT.
It’s a useful tool. For awhile.
Once we are adults, separatist identity politics or other forms of separating ourselves can be improved.
By intentionally separating ourselves, we tear our communities apart.
We need to do the opposite.
We are all humans. We are one species. Our success depends on each other.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
The next time you feel anger, frustration, or judgement against another person, pause for a minute. Whatever story you are about to tell about the other person, just stop. Don’t do it.
Let it pass.
If you can find the power, try and see if you can come to some natural position.
I tell myself, those people probably have kids. I have kids. We both have kids. We are similar. We share similar thoughts about love and caring and support.
This way I can at least STOP seeing them as ‘other’ and START seeing the similarities.
