Freedom is a popular reason for doing a lot of things in the USA.
This may be true in other countries, but I live in the US and that’s what I know.
People talk about how war is a fight for freedom. Or that freedom of speech allows racism. And how they want to be free from government rule and intervention.
To me, none of this stuff is really about freedom. Or, if it is, there are much, much bigger barriers to freedom we don’t talk much about.
Like our version of capitalism. Income inequality. Racism. Social justice.
In general, inequality.
And, more specifically, having to work really hard for not enough money to live.
To me, that’s slavery. And that’s how I mean it in this episode.
If you are not content, or some other measure of comfort, with the work you do and the compensation you get, you are a slave to the system.
I hope you can overlook my use of a charged term like ‘slavery’ in this sense. I realize that the enslavement of African people for use as a labor force in the USA is one of the worst things humans have ever done to one another. I’m not trying to diminish that, nor draw an inaccurate comparison.
I am merely trying to make a point that things haven’t changed very much, and we may need to go even further upstream to truly address this issue.
